THE SECRET OF JOY
"All this I tell you, that My joy may be yours." —John 15:11

Jesus promises us we can have His joy, the joy of God enthroned in heaven. We receive this joy by keeping God's commandments as Jesus kept the Father's commandments (Jn 15:10).

This may come as a surprise to many because we think joy depends on doing our own thing rather than God's thing. However, let the facts speak for themselves. Possibly never before has a culture been so preoccupied with feeling good, pleasure-seeking, and selfish pursuits. Yet we are very discontent. Alienated youth, depression, drug and alcohol abuse, violence, and apathy are telltale signs that something is very wrong. We've tried to gain our lives but, just as Jesus said, we've lost them (Lk 9:24).

If we refuse to learn by believing, maybe we can learn by failing. Let's try God's way, the way of self-denial (Lk 9:23), the way of the cross. Jesus' way is the only way to happiness, contentment, and joy. Jesus is the Way (Jn 14:6). Sin and disobedience rob us of our joy. Repentance and obedience restore it. Rejoice in the Lord! (Phil 4:4)

Prayer: Jesus, may I meet You risen and be delivered from selfishness.

Promise: "God, Who reads the hearts of men, showed His approval by granting the Holy Spirit to them." —Acts 15:8

Praise: Julia overcame her depression by reading and praying the Psalms.

FRUIT STAND
"No more than a branch can bear fruit of itself apart from the vine, can you bear fruit apart from Me." —John 15:4

The first words God said to newly created humanity were: "Be fertile and multiply" (Gn 1:28). Among Jesus' last words before His Ascension were: "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations. Baptize them in the name 'of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit' " (Mt 28:19). Immediately before His Ascension, Jesus commanded us to be His witnesses "even to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

Jesus expects us to produce abundantly as branches on the Vine, or else we will be "picked up to be thrown in the fire and burnt" (Jn 15:6). Even fruitful branches the Lord "trims clean to increase their yield" (Jn 15:2). The Lord makes it extremely clear we must bear fruit by leading people to Him. Christians bear fruit by making more Christians. During the first Easter season, the apostles were transformed from being fruitless to being fruitful. Expect the same transformation in your life this Easter season and Pentecost. Jesus proclaimed: "My Father has been glorified in your bearing much fruit and becoming My disciples" (Jn 15:8). "Make disciples" (Mt 28:19).

Prayer: Risen Jesus, the only answer for a sinful, sick, broken, and unforgiving world is conversion to You. May I bear fruit for Your kingdom. Trim me.

Promise: "The church saw them off and they made their way through Phoenicia and Samaria, telling everyone about the conversion of the Gentiles as they went. Their story caused great joy." —Acts 15:3

Praise: Pope St. John I standardized the date of Easter and promoted liturgical chant. He reunited a schismatic segment of the Church. He was eventually martyred by Theodoric the Great, an Arian heretic king.

CIRCLE FREEWAY
"His disciples quickly formed a circle about him, and before long he got up and went back into town." —Acts 14:20

Paul's persecutors attempted to kill him by stoning. They "dragged him out of the town, leaving him there for dead" (Acts 14:19). The circle of disciples raised the dead.

We need to form a prayer-circle around "the living dead" in our midst (1 Jn 3:14). Anyone who does not know Jesus is spiritually dead, reaping "the wages of sin" (Rm 6:23). Some churches are dead (Rv 3:1). Some marriages are dead. We can circle these people, churches, and couples, just as Joshua circled Jericho and the walls came tumbling down (Jos 6:20).

We can circle the dead and bring them to life by literally joining our hands, by a week of prayer (as with Jericho), by "praying over" people, by forming a prayer chain or intercessory group. If we but let the Spirit guide us, we can circle our dead planet with life-giving prayer. Let's go around in circles, up in resurrection spirals, into new life, a new life of true freedom.

Prayer: Father, may the praying hands on earth join in a circle of prayer and risen life.

Promise: "If you truly loved Me you would rejoice to have Me go to the Father." —Jn 14:28

Praise: When Henry had a near-death experience, he began to take his life and afterlife seriously. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for drawing all people to Yourself (Jn 12:32).

HOLY BOLDNESS
"On one occasion he was listening to Paul preaching, and Paul looked directly at him and saw that he had the faith to be saved." —Acts 14:9

Would you have the courage and the assurance to yell at a person in a wheelchair: "Stand up! On your feet!"? (Acts 14:10) By that bold command, St. Paul healed a crippled man who had never walked a step in his life (Acts 14:8).

Paul didn't always have such boldness. For example, for several days, he put up with the disruptive behavior of a girl with a clairvoyant spirit (Acts 16:16). "Finally Paul became annoyed, turned around, and said to the spirit, 'In the name of Jesus Christ I command you, come out of her!' Then and there the spirit left her" (Acts 16:18). Sometimes it took Paul days to give the command that would heal and deliver.

The Holy Spirit confirms us in our faith so we can act in Jesus' name authoritatively, boldly, and freely. The Spirit helps us pray and listen to our Father (Rm 8:26). We're in touch with Him; we know what we're doing; we have reason to be bold. The Spirit also teaches us the Word of God (Jn 14:26), so we know what belongs to us, what we have to put up with, and what we don't have to put up with.

When we know God's Word, the devil can't get away so easily with robbing us. We know enough to claim our inheritance. Finally, the Spirit empowers us to obey. During this Easter season, let the Spirit make you bold.

Prayer: Father, by Your power, may I receive the gift to heal in Jesus' name.

Promise: "Anyone who loves Me will be true to My word, and My Father will love him; We will come to him." —Jn 14:23

Praise: "How precious is Your kindness, O God! The children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings" (Ps 36:8).

"BECAUSE HE LIVES"
"God will, in turn, glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him soon." —John 13:32

We're in the midst of a fifty-day Sunday, the Easter season. If we can't rejoice in the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead, we must be dead ourselves. Because His tomb is empty, we have life to the full (Jn 10:10). "Because He lives, we can face tomorrow." For He shall wipe every tear from our eyes, "and there shall be no more death or mourning, crying out or pain, for the former world has passed away" (Rv 21:4). "This means that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old order has passed away; now all is new!" (2 Cor 5:17; Rv 21:5)

"Life is worth the living just because He lives." Yet, "we must undergo many trials if we are to enter into the reign of God" (Acts 14:22). Calvary is still ahead for each of us as we begin to walk the way of the cross. We are afraid and repelled by the pain and sufferings. But because Jesus lives, we "consider the sufferings of the present to be as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed in us" (Rm 8:18).

Because Jesus lives, the devil can no longer manipulate us and keep us slaves our whole lives long through the fear of death (Heb 2:15). "Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?" (1 Cor 15:54-55) Because He lives, "we are more than conquerors" (Rm 8:37).

Prayer: Jesus, may I shout from the rooftops that You are alive (Lk 12:3).

Promise: "This is how all will know you for My disciples: your love for one another." —Jn 13:35

Praise: "[Abraham] reasoned that God was able to raise from the dead, and so he received Isaac back as a symbol" (Heb 11:19). Praise Jesus, Author and Finisher of our faith (see Heb 12:2).
