"Save the Earth to save the hope of life in future"

"God looked at everything he had made, and found it very good."

Genesis 1:31
Dear Deacon Nguyen,

Do you remember the watershed events that marked the year 1970? I do.
One of them was the establishment of an "Earth Day".

I remember CBS News Correspondent Walter Cronkite's evening report on the first Earth Day. "A unique day in American history is ending," he began, "a day set aside for nationwide outpouring of mankind seeking its own survival—Earth Day, a day set aside for...saving life from...the foul skies, the filthy waters, the littered earth."

And now, 48 years later, we are reaping the results of complacency from that call to action. But maybe Earth Day actually began 100 million years ago.

If we believe that everything was created by God, then all that He made is by nature in praise of His glory. As the psalmist says, "... the firmament proclaims the works of his hands." (Psalm 19:1) Our Creator gave us His good creation in which to dwell, flourish and be nurtured, both of body and spirit.

And then He gave us the greatest compliment of all—He made us in His image! As a reflection of Him, we are commanded to "have dominion" over the earth. The ultimate authority over planet earth is, of course, the Lord's; we are merely its custodians. God gave us responsibility for the earth, not possession of it.

Prayer for the Earth

Praise to You, Lord God of Creation,
who looked upon all You made
and pronounced it "Good!"
and entrusted the care of the Earth
to us who bear Your image and likeness.

Help us accept Your commission
and fulfill our responsibilities
with thankfulness, courage and humility,
mindful this great gift of Earth is ours but for a short time.

Amen.

~ Father Joseph R. Veneroso, M.M.
Dinh, what would happen if we were to receive a gift then stomp on it? How seriously do we take this call to "Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that crawl on the earth"? (Genesis 1:28) Everything we do or don't do today is a life and death decision impacting all future generations.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M.
