"All this I do for the sake of the gospel, so that I too may have a share in it."

1 Corinthians 9:23
Dear Deacon Nguyen,

I can't say it enough. We all...
are called to mission from baptism
have an obligation to live Christ's calling
must pray for wisdom on how and where our missions are to play out.
Foreign mission seems natural to those literally "on fire" for their ministry. One such person was Jean Théophane Vénard, the French Catholic missionary to Indochina (1852) who was martyred in Vietnam and canonized in 1988. Many Maryknollers were deeply inspired by St. Vénard, the most famous of whom was our co-founder, Bishop James Anthony Walsh.

Dinh, do you long to capture that same "fire" for God's work that the great saints had? You can reignite your fire—the one instilled in you at Baptism—by finding a common ground with those in need; making those you're trying to reach feel accepted; and always seeking an opportunity to share the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M.

Prayer for 5th Sunday in Ordinary time

O God who inspires us all in myriad ways to be who we alone can be, and to do what is best for those near and dear to us, how much gratitude do we not feel in our hearts for those persons living and dead who have been your instruments for our own peculiar inspirations. How many saintly people have we not heard of, or lived near, or worked with during our lives thus far! And to think of all those people who reached us from their peculiar places and cultures and religious traditions to be able to sow seeds of Your Spirit within us, so pervasive is the influence of the Spirit of Your Son Jesus in us all, for which we say heartily: thank god you are our God.

Amen.
